Champions Trophy History As one of cricket's most prestigious events, the ICC Champions Trophy sits alongside the World Cup as one of the two "majors" of international cricket. The two tournaments are the only occasions on the cricket calendar when all 10 Test-playing nations come together to compete in the one event. Originally introduced as the ICC Knock Out tournament in 1998 and staged every two years since that time, the event has evolved into a round-robin competition with teams split into pool groups based on their official ICC one-day international rankings. In 2002, the tournament was renamed the ICC Champions Trophy to reflect the new competition format.

The subcontinent of India lies in south Asia, between Pakistan, China and Nepal. To the north it is bordered by the world's highest mountain chain, where foothill valleys cover the northernmost of the country's 28 states. Further south, plateaus, tropical rain forests and sandy deserts are bordered by palm fringed beaches .
Side by side with the country's staggering topographical variations is its cultural diversity, the result of the coexistence of a number of religions as well as local tradition. Thus, the towering temples of south India, easily identifiable by their ornately sculptured surface, are associated with a great many crafts and performing arts of the region.
In the desert of Kutch, Gujarat, on the other hand, a scattering of villages pit themselves against the awesome forces of nature, resulting in Spartan lifestyles made vibrant by a profusion of jewelry and ornamental embroidery used to adorn apparel and household linen. In the extreme north is the high altitude desert of Ladakh. Local culture is visibly shaped by the faith - Buddhism -as well as by the harsh terrain. Yet another facet of Indian culture is observed in the colorful tribal lifestyles of the north eastern states of Nagaland, Mizoram, Tripura and Manipur with their folk culture.
India's history goes back to 3,200 BC when Hinduism was first founded. Buddhism, Jainism, Sikhism. Judaism. Zoroashtrianism, Christianity and Islam all exist within the country today. As a consequence of India's size, the history of the country has seldom been the same for two adjoining territories, and its great natural wealth has lured a succession of traders and foreign influences to it, each having left their imprint in the country, however faint or localized. Thus, Chinese fishing nets in Kerala are a throwback to that country's ancient maritime trade, while in the north, terra-cotta figurines of the centuries BC bear distinctly Greek traces.
Modern India is home alike to the tribal with his anachronistic lifestyle and to the sophisticated urban jetsetter. It is a land where temple elephants exist amicably with the microchip. Its ancient monuments are the backdrop for the world's largest democracy where atomic energy is generated and industrial development has brought the country within the world's top ten nations. Today, fishermen along the country's coastline fashion simple fishing boats in a centuries old tradition while, a few miles away. motor vehicles glide off conveyor belts in state-of-the-art factories.

4.5 million tickets ordered during the third sales period
535,000 orders for 4.5 million tickets – these are the provisional figures for the third sales period for 2006 FIFA World Cup™ tickets, which will come to an end at midnight CET on Sunday (15 January). Compared with the two previous sales periods, interest from abroad has risen incredibly: 89 per cent of orders have come from Europe, with barely half of them, 53 per cent, from Germany. "These impressive figures confirm the tremendous interest in the 2006 FIFA World Cup from around in the world," commented OC Vice President Horst R. Schmidt. "We have received orders from a total of 197 countries."
"Despite the enormous interest, those applying in the remaining two days do have a realistic chance of getting a FIFA World Cup ticket," Schmidt continued. People wishing to target specific games should look no further than five first round ties which are not yet over-booked: Tunisia – Saudi Arabia (14 June in Munich), Saudi Arabia - Ukraine (19 June in Hamburg), Paraguay - Trinidad and Tobago (20 June in Kaiserslautern), Iran - Angola (21 June in Leipzig) and Ukraine – Tunisia (23 June in Berlin). Some games have been the subject of a great deal of interest so far, namely the Final (9 July in Berlin) and the Round of 16 tie on 24 June in Munich, as well as the first stage games between Germany - Poland (14 June in Dortmund), Brazil - Australia (18 June in Munich), Sweden - England (20 June in Cologne) and The Netherlands - Argentina (21 June in Frankfurt).
250,000 tickets will be made available for the third sales period, and the order form is available on the Internet under www.FIFAworldcup.com . Orders can be placed for all games except the Opening Match.
As with the first sales period, a ballot will be made under the supervision of an official, on 31 January. In early February, ticket allocations will be made known and written order confirmations sent out including the ticket category and number of tickets ordered.

400 days and counting until ICC Cricket World Cup 2007
Everyone involved in preparations for ICC Cricket World Cup 2007 must be keenly aware of how much work remains to be done and use each of the 400 days left until the Opening Ceremony on Sunday March 11, 2007, to achieve as much as possible. These words of wisdom have come from ICC Cricket World Cup 2007 WI Inc. Chairman Ken Gordon as the organisation today marks another significant milestone en route to the Caribbean hosting cricket's showpiece event in 13 months' time. "We are really very close to the Event now and everyone must recognise the diligence, precision and enthusiasm with which we must all undertake our respective duties to ensure this is indeed the Best Cricket World Cup ever," said Gordon. "All around us, a lot of work is taking place on venues and related infrastructure and various officials - from those in Cricket Operations to Ticketing to the countless volunteers whom we will rely on heavily - are readying themselves to welcome the world in just over a year from now. We cannot afford to be complacent or inattentive to the slightest detail." Gordon, who is also President of the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB), urged residents of the nine Host Venues - across which 51 tournament matches plus an official warm-up series will be played - to support their respective Local Organising Committee (LOC) and assist wherever possible. "There will be several operational and voluntary functions to be carried out as we draw even closer to this landmark occasion. Cricket has always been a binding force among Caribbean people and this is a signal opportunity for the sport, which means so much for us as a region, to unite us in an even more meaningful way," said the Chairman. Meanwhile, Venue Development Director of ICC CWC 2007 Donald Lockerbie noted this year is of paramount importance to the region's hosting of ICC CWC 2007. By the end of October, he reminded, all the "legacy components" of each stadium must be completed and ready for the overlay to commence. "The overlay will outfit each stadium with all the temporary elements necessary to meet the International Cricket Council's tournament specifications. However, we cannot get to that stage without working purposefully each day, steadily chipping away at our targets and meeting every deadline."
